ROD PRODUCTION

Rolls for Copper Rod Production

Copper rod is usually produced on continuous casting rolling lines. At S+C B&J the roll manufacture is tailored to suit the demands on the roll in each stage of the mill.

The quality of the working rolls is crucial to the economic operation of the mill and for the quality of the copper rod produced. The quality of the tool steel used in manufacture and the correct execution of the heat treatment process are essential. Only premium tool steels produced using the latest steel manufacturing techniques, for obtaining a high level of purity, are used by S+C B&J. During the material production stages, hot working tool steels are specially heat treated to achieve a fi ne homogenous structure, which has a signifi cant infl uence on the performance characteristics of the rolls.

For copper rod rolls, in all mill stands, the classic grade Märker® DCV has proved successful. For the more specifi c requirements of the rolls in the early mill stands, excellent results have also been obtained with rolls made from the grade Märker® WM28. For the intermediate and fi nal sizing stages Märker® WM30, with its very good high temperature strength and tempering resistance can be recommended. The properties of this material exceeds the performance capability of the common grade 1.2344 (H-13).

For highly demanding applications, the special high performance hot working tool steel Märker® DCM HP1 is available. It distinguishes itself, from the standard grades, by offering an improved resistance to thermal cracking.
