Lindlar, August 08, 2020 - At about 6:30 this morning, a works accident occurred in the molded casting shop at our Kaiserau site. The cause was a minor explosion – or, more precisely, a deflagration event – at one of the smelting furnaces, resulting in a discharge of liquid steel. One member of the workforce suffered burns and was taken to hospital in the Merheim district of Cologne. Another coworker sustained minor injuries.
Units of the Lindlar and Gummersbach fire departments attended the scene, along with the emergency rescue services, an emergency physician, and a task force of the German Red Cross. The incident was declared terminated at 7:20 am. A police crime team and the OHS department of Cologne Regional Administration will conduct investigations into the causes of the event, and can be sure of receiving all available assistance from Schmidt + Clemens.
The planning of the response measures and the directing of the emergency personnel by staff of S+C were very well organized and were explicitly commended by the fire department.
It is not yet possible to put a figure on the extent of the material damage, but it is not expected to be very great.
