Schmidt + Clemens presents annual financial statements

Fiscal year well mastered despite pandemic

Lindlar, 22.04.2021. The Lindlar-based stainless steel specialist Schmidt + Clemens (S+C) closed the last business year with a clearly positive result. With about 1,100 employees worldwide, the group of companies achieved a turnover of 255.2 M€ (previous year 265.7 M€). The balance sheet total increased from 168,306 T€ to 177,369 T€ in the reporting year.

The year 2020 was a very challenging one. The global Corona pandemic caused great uncertainty on the world markets. Travel restrictions, border closures and exit restrictions did not make the overall situation any easier. The result was a short-term closure of the site in Malaysia due to government orders for all operations and partial short-time work at the site in Germany. The world market leader with tube systems for the petrochemical industry has nevertheless managed to keep in touch with customers. "We very quickly switched to hybrid or virtual formats," reports Jan Schmidt-Krayer, managing partner of S+C. "Meetings via video system and online events for our customers were the result."

The company was also very well prepared for the pandemic. Technical solutions made it possible to allow employees to work in the home office if necessary. Comprehensive hygiene concepts at all locations meant that the risk of infections was minimised at all sites. This enabled S+C to continue to supply its customers on time and in the usual high quality in 2020.

The company now published a sustainability report for the first time. "The responsible use of resources, the environment and society is firmly anchored in the DNA of our company. Already in the fourth generation, we bear responsibility far beyond purely economic goals. We are aware that we can only ensure the stability and performance of the Schmidt + Clemens Group if we act with foresight and use our leading position for more sustainability," says the managing partner of S+C, Jan Schmidt-Krayer. Accordingly, S+C combines ecology, economy and social issues into a triad. That this is not always easy is illustrated by German energy policy. "Sustainable action is important," says Schmidt-Krayer, "but the framework conditions have to be right. It makes no sense to burden our German location economically, for example by levies on renewable energies, in such a way that sustainable action becomes unaffordable. The national emissions trading, i.e. a new CO2 tax, will burden us this year with about € 165,000.00, in 2026 it will already be € 430,000.00".

The order backlog and the good order intake in the first quarter of the current business year make us very confident. In order to further increase the company's innovative strength, INNOVATION NOW., the company's new ideas platform, was launched in January. Here, employees have the opportunity to submit their ideas for the future of the company. They are supported by a team of employees who have been specially trained in creativity techniques. After a successful start in Germany, the system will also be introduced at the subsidiaries this year and next.

In addition to its German headquarters, the Schmidt + Clemens Group also produces in Spain, the Czech Republic and Malaysia. The portfolio of high-quality stainless steel components from horizontal and vertical centrifugal casting as well as mould casting is rounded off by investment casting and forged components. Services and engineering are also part of the product range. S+C operates one of the largest research and development departments in the industry and was named TOP Innovator and Digital Champion in the reporting year.
