Solutions for Direct Reduction Midrex® and HyL® Plants
Our products: tailor-made for your specific requirementsThe direct reduction of iron ore is a key technology in global steel production. In this demanding process, reliability and efficiency are crucial. For decades, Schmidt + Clemens has been a leader in manufacturing centrifugally cast tubes for direct reduction plants – a success we attribute to our outstanding product quality and strong partnerships with customers worldwide.
The trust of many customers around the world has enabled S+C to provide more than 85.000 tube assemblies (i.e. Midrex® and HyL® reformer tubes) for the direct reduction business alone since 1986.
Complete service & supply
Reliability that sets us apartSchmidt + Clemens holds the leading position in the Direct Reduction market, being the unquestionable reference company regarding quality and reliability of their products. This strong market position is due to the great effort of the S+C group over the years to understand the customers’ needs and develop products to meet the most demanding requirements.
Beside the supply of tubular components for DRI plants, we provide an extended range of technical assistance, as well during plant shutdowns, in order to improve the overall plant performance.
Our market-leading position is built on the following key pillars:
Products & know-how
Innovation geared to practical applicationThe ever-increasing sustainable steel demand is driving operators to reduce carbon in the production process of steel. We at S+C hold the market leadership of centrifugally cast tubes for DRI Midrex® and HyL® plants. This is the result of our constant focus in new metallurgical developments.
Especially designed for application in Midrex® type Reformer up to a maximum peak reformer box roof temperature of 1185°C, our proprietary Centralloy® material(s), i.e. 4879 Micro, 60 HT D, are used. They provide excellent creep strength and creep elongation properties, which contribute to a substantial extension of tube life and therefore an increase of production.
In the business of HyL® Plants we offer a broad range of material solutions for tubular components, (i.e. PGH Radiant Coils, Reformer Tubes, Outlet Collectors etc.) operating in Steam Methane Reformers (SMR) or Process Gas Heaters (PGH).
Solutions for Midrex ® Reformers
Enhanced reliability, longer service life
New metallurgies were developed at Schmidt + Clemens. The main outcome observed was plant reliability improvement and lifetime extension of the tubes.
The proprietary Centralloy ® G 4852 Micro and Centralloy ® G 4879 Micro materials were specially designed by Schmidt + Clemens for DR Reformer applications to meet the most stringent mechanical requirements and were already supplied since 2001.
Centralloy ® 60 HT D has been designed for the operation of the reformer tubes up to a maximum firebox temperature of 1185 ºC thus, resulting in a significant increase in plant productivity. This is based in a completely new metallurgy with superior oxidation and mechanical properties.

Centralloy® G 4852 Micro & G 4879 Micro
High-performance materials for direct reductionThese metallurgies were originally developed and optimized by Schmidt + Clemens for DRI applications. The main outcome observed was plant reliability improvement and lifetime extension of the tubes. The proprietary Centralloy® G 4852 Micro and Centralloy® G 4879 Micro materials were specially designed by Schmidt + Clemens for DR Reformer applications to meet the most stringent mechanical requirements and have been supplied in the market since 2001.
Centralloy® 60 HT D
Superior performance in high-temperature environmentsCentralloy® 60 HT D has been designed for the operation of reformer tubes up to a maximum firebox temperature of 1185 ºC thus, resulting in a significant increase in plant productivity. This is based in a completely new metallurgy with superior oxidation resistance and unparalleled mechanical properties. As of today, Centralloy 60 HT D is the centrifugally cast alloy with the highest creep resistance – ever.
- Specially developed materials for Midrex® and HyL® processes have always been the core target of S+C. Since 2001 and more recently in 2004, the Centralloy® HT family of alloys for firebox temperatures up to 1185°C are improving performance and productivity of the DR plants.
- Aluminium, which is used in Centralloy® 60 HT D as a source for oxide layers build-up against high temperature corrosion phenomena. Our Centralloy® 60 HT D constitutes the latest alloy development, unique in the world of centricast products.
Solutions for HyL® Plants
