Catalyst Level Detector - CLD

Catalyst Level Value Monitoring

Catalyst drop is the best value that can be used in order to follow up the life consumed in each tube, as well as to identigy the best candidate tube for a close follow up during the furnace shutdown. A high catalyst drop produces the exposure of the upper portion of the tube to the highest temperature in the reformer box, but without the endothermic reforming reaction.

The high temperature of the area reduces the tube life. Due to the upper flange and the pressure during operation, manual catalyst drop measurement is only possible during a shutdown or during idling condition. In an effort to provide live values of the location of the catalyst level, Schmidt + Clemens has patented the Catalyst Level Detector (CLD). The system is able to directly measure the catalyst level using radar waves in order to detect the exact position of the catalyst. The tube design does not need to be modified: it can be used with exactly the same tube configuration. The only modification required to use the radar system is the change of the plug material, as the actual plugs installed in the industry are not permeable to radar waves. For this reason, the CLD will also include a new set of radar permeable plugs. The new plugs are permeable to the radar waves due to their chemical composition, while maintaining the thermal insulation that is require in service.

The CLD systems are installed in the tee upper flange, replacing the blind flange by the measuring system, therefore not requiring any modifications in the tee piece, as the device is provided with the same dimension than the actual top flange. A power supply is needed to connect the device to a 9 to 30V source.
